WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE GIRL FROM NOWHERE?

First, the main character Sophia Hepworth has been in my head a very long time! Before I knew the details of her story, I knew her personality and what she was seeking. The plot and events of her experience before, during, and after Waterford were laid out with the purpose of enabling Sophia to reach her potential in the most wild, entertaining way possible! Second, I wrote GIRL FROM NOWHERE mostly as both a way to entertain myself and as an excuse to read and study so many different interesting topics!

DOES GIRL FROM NOWHERE HAVE A SEQUEL?

Yes! I’m mostly finished writing it and I am very excited about where things go!

DO YOU PLAN TO WRITE MORE BOOKS OTHER THAN GIRL FROM NOWHERE?

Yes! I have too many stories to ever publish all of them, so I’m trying to stay focused on my most favorite ones! I am really excited about an upcoming picture book and another top-secret YA genre-bending book.

HOW DO I BECOME A WRITER?

The cool thing is, one only has to actually perform the act of writing in order to become a writer! If you are looking for ways to improve your craft, I offer tips and book suggestions on instagram @tiffany_rosenhan. If you want to know how to become a published author, then I am only one example of the many options available to publish! Which I also discuss over @tiffany_rosenhan. However, to be succinct, if you want to become a published author, my best advice is: Write! Read! Write! Repeat!

WHEN IS YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF DAY TO WRITE?

My favorite time to write is whenever I am least likely to be interrupted! Ideally, I am sitting beside a window on a snowy day, listening to music, and venturing off into an adventure inside my own head. Creating stories is magical.

DO YOU HAVE CHILDREN? HOW MANY?

I consider myself the luckiest person in the world to have four daughters! They are clever, precocious, curious little souls and I cherish our time together. However, writing when they were younger was much easier! I wrote for hours during naptime and after bedtime. Now, with neither naptime nor an early bedtime, I have to be much more strategic about balancing writing with mothering.

HAVE YOU VISITED EVERY PLACE SOPHIA MENTIONS IN GIRL FROM NOWHERE?

Only in my dreams! While I’ve been fortunate to travel to many of the countries Sophia mentions or visits, I dearly wish I could say I’ve visited them all! However, each country has a rich history, vibrant culture, and many books written about them, which is where I spend much of my time! I’ve been fascinated by geography and cultures since I was a little girl and so while I haven’t stepped foot in many of these places, immersing myself in research has given me a respect for each one. My hope is that after reading GIRL FROM NOWHERE, one might be a little more curious about the brilliant world around us!

HOW DO YOU KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT GUNS?

Ha! I know almost nothing about guns! I didn’t grow up with guns or “gun culture” but I loved learning about military history and modern tactical warfare, and guns are part of this. They are also integral to the twentieth century spy genre. Therefore, while I don’t personally spend a lot of time with guns, I do spend a lot of time reading and studying weapons and espionage. If you are a gun aficionado please note that in GIRL FROM NOWHERE, I made some decisions to prioritize simplicity over accuracy – I’m sorry! I want to tell a story, more than I want to teach, so if I have to occasionally sacrifice a gun component to do that, I will. But my goal is to be both accurate and simple. WHO INSPIRED AKSEL?

Aksel is from my imagination! Everyone asks who really inspired him and the answer is that Aksel—and his backstory—was invented inside my head alongside Sophia! However, if anyone inspired Aksel, it was my best friend who lived up a snowy mountain road, ski raced, and drove Defenders in high school! In fact, she likely inspired both Aksel and Sophia. Thanks KMD!

WHO INSPIRED SOPHIA?

The first time Sophia emerged inside my imagination was over a decade ago! I didn’t write this book then, but that’s when I first began pondering the character who would become Sophia Hepworth. She was brave, scared, vulnerable, assertive, compassionate, and courageous. She was many things, and yet she always remained an average teenage girl with a complicated life. While skilled in many cool, unique ways, she was also just a girl with two universal desires: to overcome her past, and choose her own future. Falling in love along the way was an unexpected bonus!

WHAT HAPPENS TO SOPHIA IN BOOK TWO?

I can’t say yet, but I do promise that it will be as equally explosive and romantic as book one!
